Hot Tub Installation – Guide to Planning and Costs
Before you even order your hot tub, you need to plan your hot tub installation. This guide will walk you through the planning process and break down the typical hot tub installation cost, so you know what to consider.
Here are a few things to think about:
Location
When planning your hot tub installation, it’s important to choose a spot that’s level, easily accessible, and close to an electricity supply. Most people install their hot tub on a patio, concrete base, or reinforced decking. If something goes wrong with your hot tub, a hot tub engineer will need to gain access to your hot tub and this often involves removing side panels to test, repair and replace parts.
Access
Delivery is often overlooked when it comes to a hot tub installation, but it’s crucial. Can the hot tub be wheeled into place, or will a crane be needed to lift it over a fence or building? Factoring this in early can save time, frustration and money later on.
Ground preparation
For a successful hot tub installation, the surface must be strong enough to support the full weight of the hot tub (which is between one and two tonnes once filled). A 10cm thick, level concrete slab is ideal. If you are planning on installing you hot tub on decking, you may need additional reinforcement.
Electrical setup
Most hot tubs in the UK require a dedicated power supply with RCD protection. This should always be installed by a qualified electrician. If you’re going for a plug-and-play model (which runs off a standard 13-amp socket), the setup is simpler, but you may sacrifice heating or jet power. At South West Spas we advise having a separate power supply to avoid tripping household appliances.
Delivery and installation day
Once the site and electrics are ready, your hot tub can be delivered. On your hot tub installation day, the hot tub is positioned, connected, filled with water, and powered up. At South West Spas, we offer a start up service for brand new hot tubs and we show homeowners how to maintain the water using the appropriate chemicals, so you can enjoy your hot tub for years to come.
